I have the honour to transmit herewith, copy of
a memorandum which Mr. Consul Villiers has drawn up
at my request on the subject of his action with re-
gard to a young English girl, who had been engaged
in the service of a Chinese nobleman resident now
since about a year in the neighbourhood of Stockholm,
and who seems to have been led by her employer to
suppose that she had become his lawful wife by some
fictitious ceremony of marriage. As soon as the
circunstances were brought to my knowledge I laid
the matter before the Secretary General at the
Swedish Foreign Office, who promised to communicate
with the police with a view to having the establish;
ment watched by detectives as well as with the Swe
dish Vigilance Society.
Mr. Villiers was present at the station yeste
day evening but was unable in the crowd of passenger
